The Old Words

Aro, kesh and ume: what each word does, what it costs and how to speak it.

Three words and the smaller ones

The isles keep only a little of the old tongue. Three words carry it:

  • aro, the word of life;
  • kesh, the word that strikes;
  • ume, the word of the body.

Smaller words bend them: sel makes a word light, varo turns it round you, tal sets it alight, doru throws it, and vey lends it the wind. Few remember more.

The five words you speak

  • kesh varo, Sweep (hold the right button): a wide arc of a blow in front of you. 5 mana, and you can swing it again at once.
  • aro sel, Mend (1): heals you. 10 mana, ready again after a second.
  • kesh tal, Fire Bolt (2): a ball of fire that keeps burning what it hits for a few seconds. 25 mana, ready after 2 seconds.
  • kesh doru, Weapon Throw (3): hurls your weapon up to five squares, harder than a blow. 15 mana, ready after 6 seconds.
  • ume vey, Haste (4): run 30% faster for 10 seconds. 25 mana; it can be spoken again 2 seconds after it ends.

On a phone, they are the spell buttons beside the attack button. The hotbar shows each one by its words, and your adventurer speaks them aloud when casting.

Who teaches them

You know all five from your first day. In the tale, Elder Corwin keeps the temple at Kestrelby as the house of the word aro. More words are on the roadmap.

Mana comes back over time while you are fed, and far faster inside a protection zone. See getting started for every key.
